Kidus Selassie (Holy Trinity)

 
Kidus Sellasie or Holy Trinity Cathedral, use to be the largest and most magnificent of all the churches in the city, is highly ornamented with carvings and mosaics. It is the final resting place of Emperor Haile Selassie and his wife Empress Mennen.

 

Ba’ata Mariam – Menelik II Mausoleum

The Menelik II Mausoleum located at the peak of Mount Entoto. Built in 1911, the old Baata Mariam Church serves as a tomb for Emperor Menelik II. The museum exhibits ceremonial dress of Emperor Menelik II and his wife Taitu. Other artifacts include the drum used during the battle of Adwa (against Italy), Menelik’s bed, his crown and Persian carpets.


Kid us Giorgis (St. George)
St. Georges’s Cathedral, built in 1896 in the traditional octagonal shape by Emperor Menelik II, houses a icons and murals.


National Museum
The National Museum houses numerous antiquarian relics and archaeological artifacts from prehistoric times to the modern day. Its most famous exhibit is “Dinkinesh” the 3.5 million year-old skeleton of “Lucy.”

Other exhibits include historical, archeological, ethnological collections and very ancient stone tools.

Traditional Ethiopian Lunch
Food in Ethiopia consists of a number of traditional dishes. Injera, a flat, sourdough crepe like made of the indigenous grain called t'ef, is the country staple. The injera is typically served with either meat or vegetable sauces.


Berbere, the blend of spices that gives Ethiopian food its characteristic taste, can be quite hot. A popular food called wot is a hot spicy pepper sauce, which is eaten with basic ingredients like vegetables, meat and chicken.

A traditional Ethiopian meal involves a gathering of people, who eat together from one large circular plate. Live traditional dance and music are part of the experience.
