Merkato – The Grand Market
Explore Merkato, the largest open-air market in Africa. At the everyday market, vendors display their wares on the ground or on stalls shaded by awnings.
One of the many articles on sale is quti, or coffee leaves, which the local people boil to produce a hot, stimulating infusion and drink with milk and salt, instead of sugar. There are also numerous well- stocked shops selling the beautiful, finely woven baskets for which the country is famous.
Cultural Ethiopian Dinner
Food in Ethiopia consists of a number of traditional dishes. Injera, a flat, sourdough crepe like made of the indigenous grain called t’ef, is the country staple. The injera is typically served with either meat or vegetable sauces. Berbere, the blend of spices that gives Ethiopian food its characteristic taste, can be quite hot. A popular food called wot is a hot spicy pepper sauce, which is eaten with basic ingredients like vegetables, meat and chicken.
A traditional Ethiopian meal involves a gathering of people, who eat together from one large circular plate. Live traditional dance and music are part of the experience.
